This is the first library I’ve worked at but originally I started off in the hospitality sector. Once finishing high school, I had the choice between studying science or studying business, and at the time all I wanted to do was travel the world and I thought working in hotels would help me achieve this. I eventually moved to the UK after my studies and helped open a hotel in Cardiff, Wales working as a supervisor on reception. This was an amazing experience which I’ll never forget and I’m fortunate enough to still be in contact with many of those I met during my travels.

After being overseas all I wanted to do was to go back to school and study science. This lead me to pursue a career in medical laboratory science. I decided half way through the course that what I was studying wasn’t for me. During my studies of science, I found that I enjoyed the process of research and helping others who struggled to find information to use in their assignments. This was the catalyst that lead me to pursue a career within the library and information sector.

The customer service research and analysis skills I have gained over my working career assist me to help those who haven’t had the same opportunities that I’ve had in learning how to use technology to retrieve information, whether that is face-to-face within a library or collaborating online. I hope that the events we have organised for this year and beyond help you establish your career within the library and information sector so that you can pass on your knowledge and experience too.

Hello! I’m Cindy and I am currently studying my first year of the Bachelor of Heritage, Museums and Conservation at the University of Canberra. I have recently moved to the ACT from Melbourne and am excited to help connect LIS students and new graduates. I also am continuing a Diploma of Library and Information Services through online studies. In conjunction, I volunteer at the Australian National Museum of Education, at the University of Canberra and the ACT branch of the National Trust of Australia.

I am a passionate advocate for the library and information sector and how vital its role is for the community. My role in ALIA SNGG this year will be to help run events, workshops and social outings so that LIS students and new graduates can connect and be a part of a supportive and educational framework. I hope that ALIA SNGG will be a useful and helpful resource for you!

And Announcing your new ACT State Manager:

I’m Jade and I’m ALIA’s new ACT State Manager. I work at ALIA House in Canberra and have the pleasure of working closely with the National team there. This year, I will be supporting Chris and Cindy in creating the best opportunities they can for Canberra library students to network, better themselves for employment and occasionally unwind.

I’m in my last year studying a Bachelor of Arts, Librarianship and Corporate Information Management from Curtin University and I’m looking forward to graduating! Like Michele Feely (NSW SNGG Regional Coordinator), I’ve also studied online as a mature age student. Through this experience I realised how important it is for students and newgrads to be connected and feel connected to their peers and professional associations. So with that in mind, I want to take advantage of Canberra’s active GLAMR sector and help Chris and Cindy connect library students to their GLAMR counterparts.
