The ALIA Students and New Graduates annual Key Selection Criteria workshop happened around a month ago in the home of many of our SNGG’ers…RMIT University ! We had a lovely group of students and new grads turn up to hear from our wonderful presenters: Kylie Tran (The University of Melbourne), Georgina Earl (Whitehorse Manningham Libraries) and Deborah Tout-Smith (Museum Victoria). They were all full of advice and answered our many questions.

So what was some of the standout advice?:

• An oldie but a goodie: PROOFREAD (proofread it yourself, and rope others into proofreading if for you).
• REMEMBER: Your KSC are an example of your ‘excellent written and communication skills’, craft them carefully.
• DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Find out about the organisation. Find the ‘buzzwords’ from the position description/organisation and incorporate them into your answers to the KSC.
• Answer the KSC with STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) and you’ll be a star (you could also use one of the many other acronyms floating around).
• DON’T SKIP ANY KSC! If you don’t feel you can answer it completely, use related experience to show what you COULD DO!
• BE YOURSELF!
