The British Library, St Pancras and sustainable garden.

In September 2024, I said hello to London on a visit to the British Library, St Pancras.

I discovered that The British Library is not the oldest in the United Kingdom. (Chetham Library in Manchester is the oldest – founded in 1653). Reading about the library design, I learned that 10 million bricks were sourced from the Leicestershire area to build the library.

Sustainable gardens are features of the library plaza. Signs indicate a focus on saving water. Tourists, artists, architects, students and families enjoyed the library spaces and warm weather.

You enter the library from Euston Road via steps through large metal doors that feature the library name in layers on the door header and double doors.  Ramp access is available.
The sculpture of  ‘Newton, after William Blake’, is a feature to visit at the library plaza, a large bronze sculpture by Eduardo Paolozzi in 1995.  (A location for photo enthusiasts wanting a selfie,  artists practising drawing skills & locals).

Another popular photo spot was Kings Library, a grand wall of books formally located at the British Museum. A collection of 170 Million items is estimated to be at the library.

Walking around the library I discovered a mini model of the library. Spiral stairs take you from the entrance hall to reading rooms. There are 11 reading rooms located at the library.

I had the chance to look around the Treasures of The British Library exhibit; it is impressive.

The Magna Carta, items from The Beatles and the first adhesive stamp, the Penny Black, are in the collection. Image 10 is a photo of William Shakespeare’s first folio.

Image 9 is a look at the Enigma Machine from the Alan Turing Institute.

Next to the Enigma Machine is an art display on the A-Z of Data  Science and AI by Sciberia.
