ALIA SNGG Resume Review Service: What we have learned Part 1 _Resume Tips

ALIA Students and New Graduates Group Resume Review Service is a free service available to ALIA Members. Over the years, ALIA SNGG Regional Coordinators & Resume Review Service Team have provided Workshops with resume, cover letter, interview ans selection criteria tips.

Here is a look at resume tips we have learned.

  • Create a resume that sumarises your skills & experience.

  • Tailor your resume to the role you are applying for. Reading the selection crteria or Job advertisment to find keywords of skills/experience needed for the job. Do the skills/experience match with you?

  • Have no speling, grammar or formating errors. Have clear headings & lots of white space.

  • Spell out acronyms (The word formed by the initial letters of other words) E.g. Use the Australian Library and Information Association rathan than ALIA

  • Use easy to read fonts for your resume. E.g. Arial

  • Highlight your qualifications, training, work experience and volunteer experience.

  • Be professional and write academicaly when writing your resume.
  • Make sure you have no employment or experience gaps in the last 5 years. If you have volunteered, travelled or are looking after a family member add this to your resume. (Volunteering is work experience).
  • Make sue you have a professional voicemail message on your phone.
  • Make sure your resume matches your LinkedIn details.
  • Always provide facts in your resume.

For example, instead of saying ” I delivered basic computer training” say “At  (name of place) I delivered twice weekly basic computer training to groups of up to fifteen.” And make sure to include the skills that made you successful.

Include your digital competencies. What social media you have experience using? Do you write on a blog?  Do you have experience with Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Have you  communicated on Slack for work?

  • Highlight your training, education & qualification. What have you achieved? How would the qualification or skill assist the organisation/team?
